There’s no doubt that ‘Teen Mom’ is one of the most compelling reality-TV assets MTV owns. In this case, specifically, the ‘Teen Mom’ series has been on the run for more than 10 years now, making it one of the longest-running TV shows of all time.

When there’s money to be made, TV companies are unwilling to let go of their most fruitful assets, and ‘Teen Mom: OG’ and ‘Teen Mom 2’ are certainly among those money-makers.

While the viewership varies from season to season for all shows, MTV’s ‘Teen Mom’ might be heading for a steady decline in the coming months.

According to The Ashley season nine of ‘Teen Mom: OG’ started off at a record low for the series.
Usually, when a new season premieres, the ratings go through the roof thanks to the built-up anticipation that the new season brings.

This time around, it didn’t go so well. Led by the all-star cast that consists of Maci McKinney, Cheyenne Floyd, Amber Portwood, Catelynn Lowell – the season 9 premiere scored somewhere around 680,000 viewers, down from 1,5 million viewers back in its golden days of 2015.

Of course, the series follows a different direction now with the two new moms on board, Cheyenne Floyd and Mackenzie McKee, joined in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

On average, ‘Teen Mom’ is usually watched by more than 500,000 viewers per episode and the numbers usually fluctuate and by the end of a season – they peak.

The season 8 finale of ‘Teen Mom: OG’ that premiered in June 2020 was viewed by over 690,000 people, more than 300,000 viewers short of a million.

It’s worth noting that the show does well on social media, where MTV has dedicated channels for both ‘Teen Mom’ and ‘Teen Mom: OG,’ usually scoring tens of millions of views on a monthly basis.

The series spin-off that follows the lives of Kailyn, Chelsea, Brianna, and Leah Messer also isn’t at its best right now.

The season 10 episodes of the show were followed by usually 600,000+ viewers, down from 800,000 to 700,000 viewers that the season 9 brought in. Source: The Ashley.

As the show recently lost one of its most important cast members, Chelsea DeBoer, the ratings are likely to continue on a downwards trend.

It was already confirmed that a ‘Young + Pregnant’ star Ashley Jones will indeed be replacing Chelsea DeBoer on ‘Teen Mom 2.’
